Even the torrential rain brought by Storm Babet couldn’t dampen our spirits this morning – as we welcomed number one BESTSELLING AUTHOR Michael Smith to our classroom! Facilitated by Shona at Kinsale Library, we were WOWED by Michael’s wonderful story-telling as he shared true accounts of Crean’s adventures as a resilient and intrepid explorer. He shared the most incredible photographs and brought the expeditions to life in our classroom and it was so rewarding to watch the children’s faces, so rapt and engaged. I know that they are all adventurers and explorers in their own way already – but with their limitless imagination and creativity, there are certainly writers and artists in our classroom too!
We were so captivated by Michael’s stories and photographs and, in turn, he was so impressed with the children’s respectful engagement, considered and insightful questions and their beautiful art-work. I hope that you can see some of their work in the photographs here! Michael signed the children’s pictures and books.
We had read excerpts from Michael’s book for children/young adults “Tom Crean: Ice-Man” and prepared for the visit by researching this inspirational and adventurous Kerry man who travelled so far and saved so many. As always, I was so proud of our students and our classroom and so thrilled that, even on a rainy day when we were stuck inside, we were able to venture to South Pole! Only in Summercove!
