4th class – Living things / Human Life. We kickstarted science week watching RTE science hub live. One of the experiments they conducted was showing electrical activity in the Brain. Inspired by this, we decided to study the parts and function of the brain. We learned about the left and right hemisphere , and each of the different lobes and what they are responsible for. We then did a variety of fun brain tests to test are we more of an analytical thinker, or creative thinker. The majority of 4th class are analytical thinkers. We then drew and labelled the brain in our science journals.
4th class , materials : properties and characteristics of Materials. Scientific skills : designing and making.
The students of 4th class had to plan, design and produce a construction to protect an egg from cracking when dropped at a height. We first conducted a survey of different materials : what would their strengths be ? What would their weaknesses be ? We then predicted our experiment.
We then chose from a wide variety of materials and got to building. Materials used were: tissue paper, duct tape, twine, balloons, newspaper, straws , tinfoil , masking tape; lollipops.
We then went outside and tested our constructions. At the end , we wrote up the experiment in our sicnece journal. We further elevated our learning by picking 5 random materials and surveying which one of these 5 was most commonly used. We illustrated our results on a bar graph.
