We have been using our fantastic new science kits over the past few weeks. We used our ‘Magnetic Forces’ Kit to explore all about magnets. We first looked at lots of different materials and predicted whether they would be magnetic or not. We recorded these predictions in our copies and then came the exciting part- experimenting! Using different types of magnets ( horseshoe, bar, ring and block magnets) we tested whether they attracted materials or not. We discovered that generally, metal items are attracted to magnets. Our scissors, thumbtacks, nails and paper clips all stuck to our magnets. Other materials that we tested were elastic bands, plastic rulers and wooden lollipop sticks, but these were not attracted to the magnets.
Magnets have north and south poles and whilst testing out different materials with our partners we realised that we two of the same poles are close to each other they repel each other. Two south poles will not be attracted to each other and two north poles will not be attracted to each other!
We can’t wait to test out the other science boxes!
